Hajj and Umrah essentials

Packing for Hajj or Umrah is mostly about two things: the ihram itself, and keeping everything else light, unscented and easy to carry. The range covers ihram sets and belts, comfortable footwear, compact prayer mats, ZamZam containers, dua books and the small practical items that get forgotten until the last week.

Scented products are the thing people most often get wrong, since fragrance is restricted while in ihram, so unscented alternatives matter. It is worth buying early rather than in the final days, when specific sizes tend to be hardest to find.

Questions and answers

What is ihram?
Ihram is the state a pilgrim enters for Hajj or Umrah, and for men it is also the name for the two unstitched white cloths worn. Women do not wear a prescribed garment and wear ordinary modest clothing instead.
What do I need to buy for Hajj or Umrah?
The usual list is ihram cloths and a belt for men, comfortable footwear, a compact prayer mat, unscented toiletries, a ZamZam container and a dua guide. Most people also pack a tasbeeh and a miswak.
What size ihram should I get?
Ihram is sold by cloth size rather than by clothing size, and the dimensions are given on the product page. A larger cloth is easier to wrap securely, so err upwards if you are unsure.
What is a velcro ihram?
A velcro ihram has a fastening built into the lower cloth so it holds in place without relying entirely on the wrap. Many first time pilgrims prefer it for exactly that reason.
Why do toiletries need to be unscented?
Using perfumed products is restricted while in the state of ihram, so unscented soap, shampoo and deodorant are what pilgrims pack. Check labels carefully, since many everyday products are lightly fragranced.
What shoes are suitable for ihram?
Footwear worn in ihram should leave the top of the foot uncovered, which is why sandal style shoes are used. Comfort matters more than anything else given the distances walked.
Do you stock ihram for children?
Ihram sets are stocked in smaller sizes as well as adult ones, though availability varies. The sizes currently in stock are shown on the product pages.
What should I pack for a woman going on Umrah?
Loose, plain, comfortable clothing in light fabrics, with simple scarves, since there is no prescribed garment for women. Unscented toiletries and comfortable footwear matter just as much as they do for men.
What is a good gift for someone leaving for Hajj?
Practical travel items get used most: a compact prayer mat, a tasbeeh, a miswak or an unscented toiletry set. Anything perfumed is best avoided given the restriction on scent.
When should I buy my Hajj and Umrah items?
Earlier is easier, since specific ihram sizes and travel items are hardest to find close to the season. Buying ahead also gives you time to wear footwear in before travelling.
Can I get fitted for ihram in store?
Yes, and it is worth doing if you have not worn ihram before. Cii Stores is a physical shop in Ormonde, Johannesburg, and you can also order online for delivery across South Africa.
What does the Hajj and Umrah range cost?
The range runs from small travel items up to roughly R1,199 for complete kits and premium ihram sets. Most individual items sit well below that.
How much is delivery and how long does it take?
Standard shipping is R160 and orders are delivered within 3 to 5 business days. Delivery is free on orders over R1000.
Can I return a Hajj or Umrah item?
Yes. Non consumable items can be returned within 7 days in unused, unopened condition and in their original packaging. Please note that sale items are non refundable.
